Aboriginal deaths in custody in Western Australian prisons

This article provides an overview of the nature and adequacy of culturally appropriate health services within Western Australian prisons based on coroner findings on Aboriginal deaths in custody between 2019 to 2023. The findings reported substandard quality of supervision, care and treatment. The article calls for implementation of recommendations from Australian government inquiries.

This report outlines the requirements of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander systems approach to suicide prevention and proposes a framework and implementation guidelines for such an approach.
