Description

This discussion paper outlines the principles, priority areas and whole-of-system considerations to shape the scope of Feeding Australia: National Food Security Strategy. Key priorities outlined in the paper include resilient supply chains, productivity, innovation and economic growth and competition.

Australia is a food secure nation and plays a vital role supporting global food security by exporting around 70% of its agricultural production. While Australia has a world class food system, supported by strict food safety and biosecurity measures, it cannot afford to be complacent, or to ignore new and emerging challenges facing food and supply chains. Food insecurity persists within certain segments of Australia's community, particularly among low-income households and those living in remote areas. Challenges include, but are not limited to:

  • climate change
  • economic shocks
  • biosecurity threats
  • geopolitical factors
  • supply chain disruptions.
