Alternative proteins and Australian food systems transformation
Australia must transform its food systems if it is to achieve its climate change targets and remain a global food leader. Alternative protein industries are a critical part of any food systems transformation. In this report to governments, Food Frontier explains why transforming Australia's systems of food production, consumption and distribution makes economical, public health and environmental sense, and how failing to act could result in Australia missing out on market opportunities and falling behind in the global arena.
Amongst the list of recommendations is to install a national food minister and develop a national food plan. Both were previously recommended in 2023 by a federal committee responsible for an inquiry into food security in Australia.
The report is also useful to organisations working towards climate change solutions with decision-makers and who need information about food systems.
This report also suggests that co-investment from Australian governments into the required infrastructure, research and development, and workforce is critically needed to unlock this opportunity. As is a comprehensive food systems transformation policy that sends clear direction to industry and private investors.
