Evaluation of translation ability of language models for education-related communication

The project aimed to assist the NSW Department of Education in achieving multilingual communication within educational settings through the deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs). This report describes the findings which shed light on the expected performance of current LLMs for the specific use case of the department and provide a methodology for similar evaluations.
Strategy

Public partnerships for public benefit: the NSW Higher Education Strategy 2025-29


The strategy sets out a framework to enable stronger collaboration between government and universities that targets workforce needs, student pathways, equity and effective public policy. The strategy was developed in partnership with the state’s public universities. It outlines principles for collaboration and sets out four shared priorities and a series of actions.

The NSW Government has released the interim report from the review into the state’s vocational education and training sector. A key election commitment of the NSW Government, the interim report makes seven recommendations for rebuilding TAFE NSW and strengthening the wider vocational training sector.

This paper has been developed by the Education Ministers Artificial Intelligence in Schools Taskforce to support consultation on the draft Australian framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence in schools. Public feedback on the draft framework will help refine the final Australian framework for consideration by Education Ministers before the end of 2023.
