This document acknowledges the challenges faced by young people in Australia, particularly from the impacts of COVID-19. It outlines the federal government’s significant support and ongoing commitment to ensuring that young Australians are properly supported.

This discussion paper provides an overview of the current state of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in Australia, providing evidence on two key questions that form the scope of the review: how best to attract and select high-quality candidates into ITE and how best to prepare them to become effective teachers.

Transition to Work (TtW) provides up to 12 months intensive pre-employment support for young people at risk of long-term unemployment.

The Online Employment Services Trial (OEST) evaluated whether unemployed job seekers receiving the JobSeeker Payment could achieve similar or better outcomes through online employment services compared to traditional, provider-based services. It found online services delivered similar or better outcomes at lower cost and informed policy during COVID-19 and supported a broader shift to digital services.

The Federal Department of Education, Skills and Employment undertook this review throughout 2020. Consultation with national peak disability and education bodies informed the approach taken for the review, which put the lived experiences of people with disability and their families at the centre.
