Closing the Gap: Commonwealth 2025 annual report and 2026 implementation plan
The annual report assesses the Commonwealth’s delivery against actions outlined in the 2025 implementation plan. It highlights what the Commonwealth delivered in 2025 and outlines implementation priorities for 2026 to contribute to achieving the outcomes of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. The report includes case studies on outstanding programs, services and initiatives.
The report notes there has been substantial progress toward implementing the Commonwealth’s Closing the Gap commitments in 2025. The Commonwealth continues its significant investments across priority areas such as housing, education, health and jobs.
The report is supported by the 2025 implementation plan actions status table and 2026 implementation plan actions table, which outline progress and commitments. The report is provided with appendices, which lay out further achievements and commitments.
2026 priority reforms key activities
- Progress the establishment of the First Nations Vocational Education and Training and Skills Policy Partnership.
- Collaborate to drive progress on strengthening and growing the First Nations workforce, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation child protection and family support workforce.
- Work with states and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services to deliver the Justice Sector Strengthening Plan.
- Co‑develop an Australian Public Service (APS) Priority Reforms Strategy with the Coalition of Peaks and Australian Public Service Commission.
- Lead implementation of a national approach to working with and supporting First Nations people before, during and after disasters.
