Description
As part of what is often called the “gig economy”, digital platforms such as Uber, Freelancer and Mable can connect workers with individuals or businesses looking to obtain services of various kinds on demand.
This report presents findings from a nationally representative survey undertaken in 2023 on gig economy work in Australia. One of the largest of its type anywhere in the world, this survey was a follow-up to a groundbreaking study in 2019, which revealed for the first time how many workers were earning income in this way.
The report covers:
- prevalence of digital platform work in Australia and how it has changed over time
- who is participating in digital platform work
- the digital platforms currently being used and the type of work being done
- the income earned by working through digital platforms
- how participation in digital platform work was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic
- motivations and experiences of doing digital platform work
- gendered patterns of participation
- other ways of earning money in the digital economy.
