Description

An evaluation of 15 early learning and school STEM-focussed initiatives across the education portfolio, funded through the National Innovation and Science Agenda (NISA). These initiatives were evaluated both individually and collectively to deepen understanding of how the suite of initiatives map to the needs of schools and early childhood settings and whether there were gaps, duplication or opportunities for change.

This evaluation used a mixed methods approach which included: utilising existing evaluation data, conducting fieldwork, interviews and focus groups, and initiative mapping to understand the reach and scope of initiatives.

Overall, the findings found that for individual initiatives:

  • Programs or activities successfully reached their target audiences
  • Most were positively received
  • Most achieved their objectives through increased STEM confidence and engagement in their target audiences.

For the NISA initiatives as a package, findings were generally positive and affirm the Australian Government’s approach. The evaluation report outlined several areas for future focus, including that future strategies should consider increasing focus on early years of education where foundation STEM skills are developed.
