Description
The statistical report provides a single, comprehensive annual source of infrastructure statistics for use by policymakers, industry, transport analysts and the wider Australian community. Areas covered include freight, passengers, road-related revenue and expenditure, road, rail, aviation, shipping, transport safety, transport energy and environment, infrastructure and the economy, and infrastructure construction.
Key findings
- $44 billion was spent on roads by all levels of government in 2023–24.
- $36 billion was spend on rail-related projects by the public sector in 2023–24.
- Road vehicles made up 84% of full fuel cycle greenhouse gas emissions from all domestic transport modes in 2024–25, compared to 10% from aviation.
- Domestic air travel reached 60 million revenue passengers in Australia in 2024–25.
- Sydney airport was the busiest in the country with 42 million passengers.
- Employment in total transport sector by gender in August 2025 was 80% male and 20% female.
