Report
Description

This report presents evidence on the experiences of people with disability, their families and carers in rural, regional and remote (RRR) communities with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Based on these insights, the committee outlines findings and recommendations to improve the accessibility, effectiveness and quality of disability services and supports across these communities.

It examines the barriers individuals face when navigating access to the NDIS – highlighting challenges in securing local services, supports and addressing thin market conditions. It also explores concerns around cultural safety for First Nations participants and people with disability and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) people with disability.

Key recommendations

  • Streamline the NDIS application process.
  • Develop a training and cultural awareness program for NDIS staff and contractors.
  • Work with the medical profession and communities to explore practices and initiatives to ensure timely access to health services.
  • Explore initiatives that could help address shortages of health professionals and NDIS workers in RRR areas.
  • Incorporate greater flexibility to facilitate travel for NDIS participants.
  • Implement First Nations and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse cultural safety training for staff and partners.
  • Work with First Nations community-controlled organisations to deliver culturally safe NDIS services to First Nations participants as preferred providers.
  • Develop communications strategies and materials to deliver NDIS information in First Nations languages and other community languages.
  • Improve the accessibility and diversity of services from CALD providers.
