Description
This report assesses the two-year progress on the Australian Government's Better Deal for Renters, considering how relevant jurisdictions have fared against the nine provisions of the Better Deal. It reveals that most governments have failed to deliver meaningful reforms. The Better Deal for Renters includes:
- developing a nationally consistent policy to implement a requirement for genuine reasonable grounds for eviction
- moving towards limiting rent increases to once a year
- phasing in minimum standards.
The report urges the Federal Government to commit to robust mechanisms to monitor the rollout of these reforms; incentivising state and territory governments to implement the nine principles. The report provides a clear, visual summary of the progress being made by states and territories, illustrating the jurisdictions who have made little to no progress on meeting their National Cabinet commitments.
Key findings
- Millions of renters are still exposed to unfair rent hikes, arbitrary evictions and unsafe homes.
- For the one-third of Australians who rent, basic rights and housing stability are still dictated by postcode.
