Description

AVID Australia is an evidence-based, school improvement system that supports schools to advance teaching quality and students’ academic and wellbeing outcomes.

This evaluation addresses the question 'Is there evidence that AVID schools boost student outcomes?' The report uses data from Australia’s National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) to analyse school impact. It finds that AVID Australia schools add significant value to student learning outcomes.

Findings highlight the complexity and time required to advance student outcomes and teaching quality over time with evidence-informed initiatives that respect and amplify teachers’ confidence, capability and agency.

Key findings

  • AVID schools are moving student outcomes from below the national average to exceeding national averages in some domains.
  • On average, AVID schools have added eight times more value to NAPLAN than their neighbouring schools.
  • AVID is about whole school improvement, and the results are seen and sustained across all NAPLAN domains over time.
  • AVID schools report that it is AVID’s contextualised, high-quality professional learning that is making the difference in lifting teaching quality in classrooms to raise student outcomes.
  • Implementing AVID with fidelity over time shows sustained improvement over 10+ years in established AVID schools in all states.
