Description
This report is the first from the Queensland Ombudsman’s investigation into the case of two young people with disability who experienced violence, abuse, neglect and a deprivation of human rights during their childhood and early adolescence. Details of this case were heard by the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability in 2023.
This report focuses on the investigation of the current practices and procedures of Queensland Education.
Key recommendations
- Review current practices and procedures to ensure they include information about what should occur when the outcome of a student protection report is 'monitor at school'.
- Develop a mechanism to alert staff when multiple 'monitor at school' reports have been submitted for a student.
- Review current practices, procedures and online training course to clarify that suspicions of harm must be recorded even if they do not constitute 'significant harm'.
- Conduct audits of student protection reporting to ensure compliance.
- Liaise with Child Safety to establish mechanisms for routinely receiving feedback on student protection reports.
- Amend student protection report form so it includes whether a student lives with disability.
