Description

This report discusses data on cases of Islamophobia captured in the Islamophobia Register Australia during the reporting period from 1 January 2023 to 30 November 2024. It finds more than 2.5 times the number of in-person incidents and more than three times the number of online incidents compared to any other reporting period since the Register commenced in 2014.

The authors note that the Register likely captures only a fraction of total Islamophobic incidents in Australia and the psychological impact of incidents can be profound and long-lasting.

Key recommendations

  • Address the ignorance about the extent and impact of Islamophobia.
  • Recognise that Islamophobia against women and girls is a form of gender-based violence and fund targeted intervention accordingly.
  • Implement mandatory Islamophobia awareness training for school staff and specific protocols for protecting Muslim students.
  • Implement specialised training in recognising and responding to Islamophobic incidents for law enforcement agencies.
  • Implement guidelines for responsible reporting on issues affecting Muslim communities.
