Everybody cares about using education research sometimes
This report explores the role of knowledge intermediaries in the field of education. It draws on a survey of 288 organisations across 34 countries to examine how these organisations facilitate the use of research in policy and practice. The report identifies gaps in skills and infrastructure and emphasises the need for better co-ordination and evaluation.
The report includes a systematic review of knowledge mobilisation research, a heatmap of knowledge mobilisation activities, an exploration of the funding landscape and an analysis of how intermediaries evaluate their activities. The report also features eight case studies from seven countries, highlighting practical examples of knowledge mobilisation at different levels. The report concludes by summarising key developments, challenges, and ways forward for improving knowledge mobilisation.
This is the third and final report in the Strengthening the impact of education research series.
Key findings
- Many organisations disseminate research in user-friendly formats, but this alone does not guarantee impact.
- There is a need for evidence repositories, but these need to be well-maintained and user-friendly.
- Intermediaries engage in a variety of knowledge mobilisation activities, but there are gaps in capacity building and co-ordination.
- Most intermediaries do not systematically monitor or evaluate their activities.
- There is no single optimal approach to knowledge mobilisation, as effectiveness depends on the specific context.
- A systems approach to knowledge mobilisation is essential for ensuring that initiatives are effective.
