Description

As the number of scams have grown over the past decade, Australian laws have not kept pace. Businesses often (but not always) have vague or non-existent policies to protect their customers from scams. This means that consumers are often required to wear the risk of scams on their own.

This framework introduces strong protections for consumers across the economy and seeks to reduce the harms caused by scams. It sets out consistent and enforceable obligations for businesses in key sectors where scammers operate.

Banks, certain digital platforms (including social media) and telecommunications providers will be the first sectors required to comply with the framework, as these sectors are where the greatest harms to consumers are currently occurring.

The guide covers:

  • roles in scam prevention
  • what is a scam
  • steps to prevent scams
  • sectors' obligation
  • intelligence sharing
  • consumer compensation.
