Strategy
Description

The strategy outlines what the Australian Government is doing to safeguard Australians and Australian interests from terrorism and violent extremism.

It details the changes to the terrorist threat environment since 2022 including the raising of the National Terrorism Threat Level to ‘probable’, and outlines the key challenges faced domestically, and globally.

More than ever, there is a need for a flexible whole-of-nation response to support and strengthen communities, ensuring Australia remains a safe place for everyone. We can achieve this through a shared understanding of what terrorism and violent extremism are and what we can do to prevent individuals from resorting to violence to advance their cause.

The Strategy highlights that early identification and prevention is the best defence. This means addressing the root causes of violent extremism and providing early intervention services to vulnerable people, with law enforcement working hand-in-hand with health services, education providers and community services.

The Strategy’s action plan sets out key areas of effort including:

  • strengthening support services to at-risk individuals and their families
  • supporting and increasing capability in our communities
  • strengthening technological capabilities and legislative frameworks to counter and remove extremist content online
  • deepening relationships and collaboration with industry, government agencies, academia and international partners.
