Circular economy in action: regional perspectives
An in-depth look at how six Australian regions are adopting circular economy practices. By analysing the policy settings, circular practices and outcomes in diverse areas, the report highlights the need for robust policy frameworks, targeted investment, and collaborative approaches to realise the full potential of circularity in Australia.
Although regional Australia is home to almost 40% of the nation's population, as well as many of the industries that will drive the future economy, circular economy research and investment has disproportionately focused on urban areas. If Australia is to meet it net zero targets, the authors argue, regional communities will need to play a leadership role.
The report draws on a literature review, policy analysis, and six regional case studies looking at the Bega Valley (NSW), Limestone Coast (SA), Albury (NSW), Launceston (Tas), Rockhampton (Qld) and Central Desert (NT) to explore how circular economies are taking shape outside of the capital cities.
