Report
Description

The Department of Social Services conducted a round of public consultation between 28 November 2023 and 19 January 2024 to better understand community and stakeholder views on the recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission or DRC). The consultation encouraged responses from people with disability, as well as family members, carers, supporters, advocates, disability representative organisations and other stakeholders. It took the form of an online questionnaire and a public submission process. The public consultation revealed a high level of overall support for the recommendations of the DRC. Many stakeholders shared the view that implementation of these recommendations constitutes a real opportunity to improve the lives of people with disability in Australia.

Several key themes emerged through the consultation process.

  • Human rights
  • Inclusion
  • The central role of people with disability in implementation
  • The future of special/segregated settings
