As Washington focuses on the Republican race for persidential election in 2012, carl Ungerer looks at two themes surrounding the foreign and defence policy stances of the Republican candidates. The first theme is a growing isolationist sentiment among the leading candidates, some of whom advocate for the immediate withdrawal of froces from Iraq and Afghanistan. The second theme concern multilateralism, and includes suggestions from candidates to reduce funding to the United Nations and to wind back the terms of the New START agreement with Russia.
